This remnant of one of Chicago’s most significant nineteenth century buildings is a reminder of the grandeur and creativity of Louis Sullivan’s early Modernist skyscrapers.
Key Details:
The arch is constructed of molded terracotta and contains swirling geometric forms along with echoes of natural shapes and sizes. The arch originally rested over the main entrance of the 13-story stock exchange building and welcomed visitors into the structure. Despite protests from preservationists, the building was demolished in 1972 to make room for new development. The arch was preserved along with a reconstructed version of a trading room from the original building.
If You Go:
This Arch is adjacent to the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago and across the street from Millennium Park. There are numerous cultural attractions within short walking distance.
